Deception Island

Recommended type of dive: Boat and Kayak

How to dive this site: The best diving is on the west side of Deception Island. The south side is relatively shallow. A small cove in the northwest corner of the island is protected from most current. The cove has a flat rocky bottom at 25 - 35' with several large submerged rocks. Heading north, the bottom slopes rapidly past recreational limits. Octopus and wolf eels are common; with pectin and rock scallops growing to large proportions.

Directions to the site: GPS Coordinates: N48 24.445 W. 122 40.375. HAZARDS: High boat traffic between Deception Island and Lighthouse Point. Kayakers beware! Strong currents are present between Deception Island and Bowman Bay. Plan your journey with the flow of the current in mind.

As a boat dive - Launch from either Cornet Bay Marina on the northeast side of Whidbey Island or Bowman Bay. Head west to Deception Island just outside the west entrance to Deception Pass.

As a kayak dive - Launch from Bowman Bay on the southwest side of Fidalgo Island. Head west to Deception Island.
